When sleep problems go deeper than sleep hygiene
Most people have heard the standard advice — consistent bedtime, no screens, limit caffeine. But for many people with chronic insomnia, those recommendations barely scratch the surface. When sleep problems are driven by anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or other psychiatric conditions, they require a psychiatric solution — not just a behavioral one.
Infinity Health provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment for insomnia and sleep disorders where mental health is a contributing factor.
Not sure if your sleep problem is psychiatric? Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, or extreme daytime sleepiness can be signs of sleep apnea or another medical sleep disorder. These are best evaluated by your primary care provider or a sleep specialist. We’re happy to coordinate if mental health is also a factor.
Signs your sleep problem may have a psychiatric component
- Racing thoughts or worry that keeps you awake despite being tired
- Nightmares or hypervigilance that disrupts sleep — common in PTSD
- Insomnia that began alongside or worsened with depression or anxiety
- Sleep disruption related to mood cycles in bipolar disorder
- Medication side effects affecting sleep
- Insomnia that has lasted more than three months and doesn’t respond to standard approaches
Our approach to insomnia treatment
A thorough psychiatric evaluation is the starting point — identifying any underlying or co-occurring conditions that may be driving the sleep problem. From there, treatment may include medication management targeting both the sleep issue and its underlying cause, coordination with your primary care provider, and referrals for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) when appropriate.
Insomnia in older adults
Sleep disorders are especially common and impactful in older adults. Cathie Campbell’s geriatric expertise makes Infinity Health a strong choice for older patients dealing with sleep disruption alongside other medical or psychiatric conditions.
